Born in Chicago in 1954, Sandra Cisneros is the third child and only daughter in a family of seven. She earned her B.A. in English from Loyola University Chicago and an M.F.A. in Creative Writing from the University of Iowa. Cisneros has held diverse roles including high-school counselor, arts administrator, college recruiter and visiting writer at prestigious universities.
 
Her notable works include the poetry chapbook "Bad Boys," the acclaimed novels "The House on Mango Street" and "Caramelo," and the picture book "Have You Seen Marie?" Her writing has received numerous accolades, such as the MacArthur Foundation Fellowship, the PEN Center USA Literary Award, and the Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize. "The House on Mango Street"
has sold over six million copies, won the Before Columbus Foundation's American Book Award in 1985 and is required reading in middle schools, high schools, and universities across the country. Cisneros' books have been translated into 25 languages and selected for various One City One Book projects. In addition to her accomplishments, she is the founder of the Macondo Foundation and the Alfredo Cisneros Del Moral Foundation and currently resides with her pets in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.
