Message from the College Counseling Office

It's hard to believe that graduation is just around the corner, and in a few quick months our seniors will be college freshmen. As their chapter at Sage closes, we are delighted to report that seniors are on their way to wonderful colleges - colleges that reflect the depth and breadth of our students; colleges that speak to our students, their growth over the past four years, and all facets of who they have become. Below you will find a list of colleges that accepted Sage seniors, and in boldface are the colleges that students chose to attend. Of course, this is just a list, and behind each college on the list is a story - stories that are rich with personality and spirit, those of our seniors.

Just for context, as expected this was one of the most selective years on record in admission offices across the country. Many schools saw record increases and greater selectivity. For instance, Wesleyan’s applicant pool increased 22%. The UCs had a fifth-straight record year with 126,701 applications while also announcing plans to curtail enrollment by 2,300 for the freshman class. The admit rates at many colleges were equally humbling: Harvard, Stanford and Yale hovered in the 7 to 7.5% admit rate range. Columbia, Princeton and Brown were in the 9 to 10% range. Clearly, you can appreciate what our students were up against! While these are the current realities of admission, we are especially proud of our Sage students who defied the odds. Admission officers spoke very highly of our students, and it showed in the results.

Our seniors sent out nearly 1,300 applications to 246 different colleges in 35 states, the District of Columbia and the United Kingdom. Seniors were especially ready to jump in to the process quickly, as 68% of the Class of 2009 opted to apply to schools early action or early decision. All seniors were admitted to at least one four-year college, and we had admits to all nine University of California campuses. There were admits to film schools, business schools and music schools. Students racked scholarships for academic excellence as well as artistic talents. We had athletic recruits, National Merit finalists, journalists, engineers, generalists, soldiers, politicians, artists, leaders in service, thespians, writers, etc. – the whole range! Ultimately, our seniors found their passions during their tenures at Sage and they translated this well to their college searches. We can't wait to hear back about their college experiences and to learn how their lives unfold professionally and personally.

As the school year comes to a close, it's obviously a time to reflect and pass along thanks. Our faculty work incredibly hard to advocate for, teach and mentor our students. Sage is truly fortunate to have such an amazing crew nurturing our students. Our College Counseling team of Greg McCandless, Barbara Robinson and Samantha Smith is second to none. They deserve recognition for jobs well done. I also want to take a moment to thank our seniors. You will be incredibly missed next year.

It is with great pride that we wish our seniors well. They are a remarkable and wonderful bunch. As they start their new journeys, we are certain that they won't just take flight, but that they will soar. Congratulations Class of 2009! We celebrate you!

All the best,

Sonya K. Smith
