Freshman Racks Up Awards in Multiple Science Competitions
Freshman Nadia Ansari has had an incredible run in local, state and international science competitions this semester.
It started in March, when she won multiple special awards, a first place in her category of Zoology, and the Sweepstakes award for best project at the OC Science & Engineering Fair. Her project is entitled: “Use of Pulsed Photobiomodulation in Nerve Regeneration after Injury-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy in Danio Rerio.”
At the California State Science Fair (CSEF) in April, she won the Cheryl Saban special award, the BioGENEius special award, and second place in her category.
She was nominated to attend the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) the week of May 13 in Phoenix. In the Animal Sciences category, she received the Fourth Award of $500. She also received a special award from NASA, a Second Award of $750.
Earlier in May, it was announced that she was the winner of the 2019 Southern California BioGENEius Challenge.
As the winner, she received a scholarship from SoCalBio to attend the 2019 BIO International Convention in Philadelphia in early June. At the convention, she will compete against 19 other students from across the U.S., Canada and Germany in the Biotechnology Institute’s International BioGENEius Challenge, according to a press release.
Ansari’s project focuses on Photobiomodulation (PBM) as a potential therapy for peripheral neuropathy – a painful degenerative disease that affects an estimated 600 million people worldwide.
In the same Southern California BioGENEius Challenge, junior Sasha Ronaghi won third place for her project, “Using Machine Learning and Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy to Analyze the Effects on Antibiotics on P. Aeruginosa.”
