Never Let Him Go: Justice For My Brother & A Public Reckoning

Steve Johnson
Wednesday, January 15 | 5:00 - 6:00 PM
Kazu Fukuda Black Box Theater
Scott Johnson, a gay American doctorate student, was found dead at the base of a cliff in Sydney, Australia in 1988. Authorities quickly determined the 27-year-old died by suicide.

As an older brother, Steve Johnson, was skeptical that Scott would take his own life and started investigating the suspicious death. This multi-decade quest for justice and truth culminated with Steve uncovering his brother was the victim of a gay hate crime.

Since 2005, Steve has spearheaded efforts in New South Wales, Australia, to honor and seek justice for hundreds of victims of homophobic hate crimes that ravaged the Australian gay community in the 1980s and 1990s. His effort helped pave the way for a national referendum for gay marriage legalization, which was finally passed in 2017.

Steve has been a technologist, entrepreneur, private investor, and philanthropist for 30 years. He has professionally specialized in building innovative technologies into successful enterprises, with a personal and philanthropic focus on education, climate change awareness, the arts, and gay rights equality.

Earlier this year, Steve published "A Thousand Miles From Care: The Hunt for My Brother’s Killer – A Thirty-Year Quest for Justice."

Steve is one of the proud co-founders of Sage Hill School.
